Newton Reservoir Fishing Guide

Utah, USA

Plan your fishing trip

Newton Reservoir is a small, open-country reservoir on Clarkston Creek north of Newton in Cache Valley. A trip here is different from visiting a staffed state park: the federal recreation listing describes primitive facilities, shoreline cottonwoods and willows, and no on-site manager.

Source review: 2026-10-08. This dates the editorial source check, not a fish survey or individual-rule verification.

Planning information, not live opening status or verified fishing permission. Check current operator notices and rules before each visit. Dated notices do not confirm later reopening. Official source links are non-affiliate.

Getting there from Logan

The federal directions follow US 91/89 north from Logan to Smithfield, then State Road 218 toward Newton. The reservoir is about two miles north of town. Use the official recreation map to reach the reservoir rather than treating a general waterbody map pin as a trailer ramp or legal shoreline entrance. Recreation.gov lists boat launching, picnicking and primitive camping; it does not provide a live ramp-condition report.

Plan for a primitive outing

The federal listing describes a reservoir of approximately 290 acres when full, at about 4,770 feet elevation. “When full” matters: that size is not a statement about today’s shoreline or launch depth. The recreation area has no on-site manager. Our planning recommendation is to arrive with drinking water, sun protection and everything needed to remove your rubbish rather than rely on a staffed visitor centre or serviced campground.

Recreation season is not a fishing season

Recreation.gov lists June through September as the managed recreation season and describes all-weather access. Those are recurring facility descriptions, not a dated 2027 opening announcement or a guarantee of clear roads, usable ramps or safe ice. For a shoulder-season visit, check conditions before towing a boat. Do not interpret vehicle access or a visible frozen surface as approval to travel onto the reservoir.

Check the fishery before selecting tackle

The federal recreation summary lists perch, bluegill, sunfish and rainbow trout, but it is not a current stocking report or a complete species survey. Use Utah DWR’s current fishing guidebook and its published revisions to check Newton-specific exceptions, permitted methods and any species-specific harvest rules. In particular, do not infer a tiger-muskie harvest entitlement from a general species listing. Select tackle after confirming the rules for your intended fishery.

Equipment planning for Newton Reservoir

Start with your actual access and a lawful fishing plan. Where we have reviewed destination-specific product picks, they remain separate in this guide; otherwise this checklist does not endorse a particular product.

Equipment guidance is not permission to fish. Confirm the exact water, date, species, method and current official rules first. A closed season prohibits targeting, even with release. Recorded fish presence does not establish an open fishery.

  • Check permitted methods, bait and hook restrictions before choosing tackle. Match rod, line and lure ratings to the lawful method and conditions, rather than buying by species name alone.
  • Plan weather protection, drinking water and a way to call for help. For boat trips, confirm required flotation and safety equipment with the responsible boating authority.
  • Decide between a verified shore location and a permitted boat trip before buying equipment. Shore casting and deeper-water presentations can require different setups; check depth and conditions rather than assuming one combo fits the whole water.
  • A map marker is a reference location, not a launch, parking area or public access point. Confirm access and any boat restrictions with the site operator before buying launch- or boat-dependent gear.
  • Pack camping equipment only for a confirmed, permitted campsite. Nearby campground listings do not guarantee availability or permission to camp at the water. Match shelter and sleep-system choices to the forecast.

This is an editorial planning checklist, not hands-on product testing. Use equipment you already own when suitable. The gear directory contains affiliate links; any product suggestions below have their own disclosure. Retailer region, availability and Canadian shipping are not guaranteed.

Water location & public access

Coordinates and Near Me distances refer to a named-water reference point, which may be a lake reference or river mouth—not a launch, safe entrance, or permission to cross private land. Distances are straight-line, not driving distances.

View water reference point on map (not directions)

This water has not been reviewed in this access catalog. See any source-backed access information in the guide below and confirm current access, permissions and restrictions with the land manager. The water reference map is not an arrival route.

Source verification is not live availability. Before every visit, check official closures, fees, permits, road and ramp restrictions and conditions with the land manager. A recent review does not establish that the site is open, safe or legal to use today. Check fishing licences and local rules separately. External maps are for orientation only.
