Pere Marquette River Fishing Guide
Michigan, USA
Plan your fishing trip
The Pere Marquette is a free-flowing river system running from east of Baldwin toward Lake Michigan at Ludington. Its resident trout and migratory salmon and steelhead fisheries share a river corridor with paddlers and private landowners. Choose the reach first, then plan access and tackle.
Source review: 2026-10-08. This dates the editorial source check, not a fish survey or individual-rule verification.
Planning information, not live opening status or verified fishing permission. Check current operator notices and rules before each visit. Dated notices do not confirm later reopening. Official source links are non-affiliate.
Gleason’s Landing: a verified access point
The Forest Service identifies Gleason’s Landing as a back-in access for canoeing, kayaking and boating, with parking for 40 vehicles and vault toilets. Motors are prohibited on this stretch. The access page describes year-round use unless otherwise posted, but that does not guarantee safe flows, an unobstructed launch or a fishable river on your date. Check its active restrictions before departure.
The flies-only reach is not the entire river
The National Wild and Scenic Rivers profile identifies M-37 to Gleason’s Landing as flies-only, catch-and-release water. Do not extend that description to every downstream reach, or assume tackle legal elsewhere can be used here. Match your put-in, take-out and fishing location to the current Michigan DNR fishing regulations before rigging a rod. A river-access permit and a fishing licence serve different purposes.
Summer permits and a realistic float plan
Recreation.gov requires permits for all watercraft, including tubes and paddleboards, between Forks and Indian Bridge during the summer permit period. Its published 2026 calendar is May 22–September 7; these dates must not be reused for another year. Reservations are organised by three river segments, and a same-day multi-segment trip requires selecting every intended segment before booking. The permit page lists watercraft hours of 9 a.m.–6 p.m.; check the current rules for your trip rather than assuming a 24-hour access listing overrides them.
Rest stops, camping and seasonal expectations
Much of the corridor is privately owned. Use signed public sites for rest stops, and arrange your take-out and shuttle before launching. National Forest corridor camping is limited to designated sites, not any convenient bank. The river profile confirms resident trout plus salmon and steelhead runs from Lake Michigan, but does not establish a peak week for your trip. Our recommendation is to check current flows and access conditions rather than build an itinerary around a guaranteed run or catch.

Equipment planning for Pere Marquette River
Start with your actual access and a lawful fishing plan. Where we have reviewed destination-specific product picks, they remain separate in this guide; otherwise this checklist does not endorse a particular product.
Equipment guidance is not permission to fish. Confirm the exact water, date, species, method and current official rules first. A closed season prohibits targeting, even with release. Recorded fish presence does not establish an open fishery.
- Check permitted methods, bait and hook restrictions before choosing tackle. Match rod, line and lure ratings to the lawful method and conditions, rather than buying by species name alone.
- Plan weather protection, drinking water and a way to call for help. For boat trips, confirm required flotation and safety equipment with the responsible boating authority.
- For flowing water, plan your position and footing before selecting tackle. A wader listing does not establish that wading is safe or permitted; current, depth and releases can change.
- A map marker is a reference location, not a launch, parking area or public access point. Confirm access and any boat restrictions with the site operator before buying launch- or boat-dependent gear.
- Pack camping equipment only for a confirmed, permitted campsite. Nearby campground listings do not guarantee availability or permission to camp at the water. Match shelter and sleep-system choices to the forecast.
This is an editorial planning checklist, not hands-on product testing. Use equipment you already own when suitable. The gear directory contains affiliate links; any product suggestions below have their own disclosure. Retailer region, availability and Canadian shipping are not guaranteed.

Water location & public access
Coordinates and Near Me distances refer to a named-water reference point, which may be a lake reference or river mouth—not a launch, safe entrance, or permission to cross private land. Distances are straight-line, not driving distances.

This water has not been reviewed in this access catalog. See any source-backed access information in the guide below and confirm current access, permissions and restrictions with the land manager. The water reference map is not an arrival route.
Source verification is not live availability. Before every visit, check official closures, fees, permits, road and ramp restrictions and conditions with the land manager. A recent review does not establish that the site is open, safe or legal to use today. Check fishing licences and local rules separately. External maps are for orientation only.
