Alberta hunting regulations pilot
2026 guide; specified spring seasons extend into 2027. Sources inspected 2026-10-19.
Planning summary only, not legal advice or confirmation that hunting is open or permitted. Confirm your exact WMU, species, animal class, residency, licence, dates, weapon and land access with the official authority before every trip. Sources were inspected on 2026-10-19; this is not a live rule or closure feed. Maps of waters, campsites and trails do not grant hunting access.
Alberta pilot only. The big-game dates below are explicitly limited examples, not a province-wide season calendar. Adult recreational licensing is summarized; youth provisions, Indigenous harvesting rights, outfitter allocations and all special hunts are not comprehensively covered. Official guide tables and footnotes control. Detailed species profiles, mapped hunting access and combined-trip guides are not yet included.
Licences, tags and eligibility
Alberta uses a 10-digit Wildlife Identification Number (WiN) for draws, wildlife certificates and licences. Big-game and game-bird hunters need the applicable wildlife certificate and hunting licence. Carry required licences and paper tags; the guide identifies the AlbertaRelm app as the accepted provincial electronic-licence option. An electronic licence does not replace a required physical tag.
First-time hunters must satisfy Alberta’s hunter-education criteria. The guide distinguishes Alberta residents, non-resident Canadians and non-resident aliens; licence availability, permitted combinations and guide/host requirements differ. Do not apply a resident example below to a visiting hunter without checking the corresponding licensing table.
For big game, non-resident Canadians and non-resident aliens must be accompanied by a licensed guide or hunter host, subject to the guide’s licence-availability and hosting conditions. Non-resident aliens hosted by hunter hosts cannot use the special-licence draw seasons marked with a square in the tables. Confirm eligibility before applying or booking.
Hunters using a bow and arrow must also purchase a bowhunting permit; the guide distinguishes this from crossbow use. A bowhunting permit does not substitute for the species licence, a required special licence or land permission.
A special-licence symbol in a season table means that the applicable special licence is required; a general licence does not substitute for it. Big-game harvest entitlement follows the actual licence and tags, animal class and WMU—not a single provincial daily bag limit. Supplemental licences have their own valid areas and combinations.
For migratory game birds, also carry a valid federal Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit with the Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp, in addition to applicable provincial requirements. Federal youth-permit exceptions must be checked separately. Verify current licence prices and purchase options in AlbertaRelm rather than relying on an undated price here.

Weapon rules: check the season and the exceptions
The guide defines archery-only seasons as bow-and-arrow seasons. General seasons normally allow a firearm, crossbow or bow and arrow, but local restrictions and table footnotes can narrow those choices. Do not assume a crossbow qualifies for an archery-only season; check any applicable disability authorization with the authority.
The general prohibitions cover prohibited equipment, lawful hours, vehicles, roads and discharge restrictions. Read the big-game and game-bird subsections for species-specific firearm, ammunition and archery requirements. This pilot does not provide a complete equipment-compliance checklist or instructions for using weapons.
Federal firearms licensing, possession, storage and transport requirements are separate from a hunting licence. Municipal discharge bylaws and park-specific permits can apply even during a listed season. The federal migratory-bird summary prohibits hunting earlier than half an hour before sunrise or later than half an hour after sunset; consult all applicable rules for your hunt.

Land access is a separate permission check
Identify the exact WMU using legal descriptions and maps, then establish ownership, permission and land-manager restrictions. Public land is not blanket authorization to hunt; parks, recreation areas, occupied land, agricultural leases and municipal boundaries may have additional restrictions.
A nearby water, trail or campsite on Outland Atlas is not a hunting-access recommendation. No hunting-access markers or inferred hunting zones have been added in this pilot. Check written-permission and discharge-permit requirements in the official guide for the specific location.

White-tailed deer
Limited example — WMU 200, antlered and antlerless: the 2026 Parkland table lists archery-only September 1–October 31 and general November 1–30. This example is not a season for all Alberta WMUs.
Harvest only the class and number authorized by your licence and tags. The guide’s supplemental antlerless white-tailed deer licence has one tag and specified WMUs; this does not increase every deer licence’s entitlement. Check the guide’s CWD testing requirements and reporting duties before travel.

Mule deer
Limited example — WMU 200, antlered and antlerless: archery-only September 1–October 31, 2026; general November 1–30, 2026 requires the applicable special licence. Other WMUs also require special licences during archery periods.
There is no universal daily bag allowance in this summary. Follow the species, class, zone and harvest entitlement on the issued licence and tags; consult licence-combination and CWD requirements.

Elk
Limited example — antlered elk in the WMU group 200, 202, 203, 232 and 234: archery-only September 1–October 31, 2026; general November 1–30, 2026 requires the applicable special licence. This is not the separate antlerless schedule.
Antlerless dates and licences can differ, including seasons extending into 2027; some areas impose antler-point restrictions. The issued licence and tags determine harvest entitlement. Do not transfer this example to another WMU or elk class.

Wild turkey
The 2026 guide lists May 1–31, 2027 for WMUs 300–308, 400 and 402, with an applicable special licence required. The listed daily and possession limits are both one. This is a spring 2027 listing, not an autumn 2026 season.
Confirm draw eligibility, the issued licence conditions and any updated 2027 information before making travel arrangements. The bird table alone does not establish licence availability for your residency.

Waterfowl
For the federal August 2026–July 2027 summary, ducks and the combined Canada, cackling and white-fronted goose group have autumn dates September 1–December 16, 2026 in Zone 1 and September 8–December 23, 2026 in Zone 2. Check the federal source’s WMU membership rather than guessing a zone from a nearby town.
Ducks, all species combined: eight daily and 24 in possession. For non-residents of Canada, no more than two goldeneyes combined (Barrow’s and common) daily and six in possession. Canada, cackling and white-fronted geese combined: eight daily and 24 in possession.
Snow and Ross’s geese combined have separate provisions: 50 daily, no possession limit, with the same respective autumn zone dates and a March 15–June 15, 2027 spring period. These are not the limits for other geese. Federal and provincial requirements both apply; this summary does not cover every migratory bird or method exception.

Black bear
Limited example — WMU 200: general September 1–November 30, 2026 and April 1–June 15, 2027. The guide explicitly requires a new-year licence for spring 2027. Other WMUs have different spring end dates or archery-only restrictions.
Use the actual licence and tags to establish harvest entitlement; supplemental black bear licences are restricted to listed WMUs and must not be assumed valid in WMU 200. The guide prohibits hunting a bear under one year old or a female accompanied by a cub under one year old. Read all current requirements in the bear section before planning a hunt.
