Lepisosteus osseus
Longnose gar have a very long, narrow snout armed with teeth and an elongated body with an olive-brown to dark green back. They are a distinct species from shortnose gar. Vermont Fish & Wildlife records them in Lake Champlain and some lower tributaries and includes gar among its fishing opportunities. Regional presence is not a guarantee of legal targeting, harvest, access or current abundance.
Vegetated lake shorelines and slower river sections, sometimes including moderate current. They can breathe atmospheric air using their swim bladder. Consult current rules for the exact water before fishing.
