Paddlefish

Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) — reference image

Polyodon spathula

Paddlefish are large, mostly cartilaginous freshwater fish related to sturgeons, recognizable by their long paddle-shaped snout and smooth, nearly scaleless body. Adults filter plankton from the water; they are not catfish despite the name spoonbill cat. Montana supports a managed recreational fishery. Special paddlefish rules, tags, designated areas and closures apply: consult Montana FWP before fishing. A state record or range description is not permission to target fish.

Slow or quiet parts of large rivers and impoundments, with spawning associated with river gravel bars during spring high water. This habitat summary does not establish a verified access point.

Paddlefish Fishing Regulations & Limits

A recorded association does not establish that targeting or retaining Paddlefish is permitted. Confirm current species protections, seasonal and emergency closures, reach-specific rules, gear restrictions, bag and size limits with the responsible fisheries authority before fishing. A fishing license does not override these restrictions. Outland Atlas's regulation records may be incomplete; missing rules do not mean unrestricted fishing.
